The Advanced Air Transportation Technologies (AATT) Project is enabling substantial increases in the effectiveness of national and global air transportation systems. In alliance with the FAA and industry, the project is developing and testing automation aids that assist in the decision-making processes between pilots, air traffic controllers, and dispatchers. These improvements will be achieved by developing and testing air traffic control decision support tools and advanced distributed air-ground concepts. This approach will allow air traffic controllers and airspace users to choose the best flight path within the constraints of safety and the needs of other users. The outcome of this effort is that users will be able to minimize direct operating costs by making trade-offs between time and routing, improve the effectiveness of high-density operations, enable operations in a smooth and efficient manner in capacity-constrained flight regions, and provide system improvements that are deployable world-wide.
