Efficient Aircraft Spacing (EAS) Project:

The Efficient Aircraft Spacing Project will focus on innovating air/ground information management concepts and wake vortex research. The goal of the Project is to evaluate a variety of ground-based and ground/airborne separation concepts in the terminal, en route, and oceanic environments, develop the field test data and analysis required to safely change the wake vortex separation standards, and conduct the focused research to maintain critical knowledge and skills in wake alleviation. EAS products will include: (1) flight demonstration of a near-term application of Airborne Separation Assistance Systems (ASAS), (2) research prototypes of new tools for flight crews, air traffic service providers, and airline dispatchers, (3) Wake Vortex Advisory System (WakeVAS) concept of operation and performance assessment, and (4) feasibility demonstration of wake alleviation devices on practical airplane configurations in wind tunnel and tow tank facilities.  This Project continues through FY2009.
